Why do I need travel vaccinations?

In the UK, the childhood vaccination programme provided by the NHS offers immunisations against diseases that are a risk in the UK, such as Measles, Tetanus, Polio, Mumps and others. When you travel overseas you may be exposed to diseases that are not a risk in the UK, so are not included in the childhood vaccination programme, but for which effective vaccines are available.

As well as ensuring that your UK vaccinations are up to date and that you have had any booster jabs that you need, you also need to find out what diseases are prevalent in the areas you are visiting and ensure that you are protected against them.

When should I get vaccinated?

Many vaccines will be most effective if they are administered several weeks before any potential exposure to the disease. This is because vaccines trigger an immune response in your body, which may take several weeks to fully develop. Some vaccines require more than one dose to be administered over a period of weeks or months.

We, therefore, recommend that you speak to us as soon as you start planning your trip to allow you to schedule your vaccinations appropriately. However, if you are travelling unexpectedly, or have not considered vaccination requirements please get in touch and we will be happy to advise you. Because we take a holistic approach to travel health, we can give you advice beyond just immunisation that will help you to minimise your risk of exposure to diseases while you are away.

What vaccines and medications do I need?

When you come to Jura Health for a travel vaccination consultation, we will not simply look at the countries you are visiting and tell you what vaccinations are required. There are a number of factors that must be considered in order to ensure that your health is protected when you are overseas.

Our specialist travel health nurse will consider your itinerary and the activities that you have planned to identify the vaccines and medicines that should be considered. They will then review your medical history as well as your current state of health and any ongoing medical issues or medications that you are taking and will recommend vaccinations based on all of this information. All medical information that is shared with Jura Health is held in the strictest confidence.

Do you provide anti-malarial medication?

Yes, we hold anti-malarial medication in stock and can supply appropriate medication to you at very competitive rates. There are several different antimalarial drugs available and the type of tablet we prescribe will depend on a number of factors including where you are going, your age, and your medical history.

Jura Health will assess which drug is suitable for you and may recommend a short trial before you leave to ensure you do not suffer any adverse reactions. If you do suffer side effects we can prescribe an alternative. It is very important to take the correct dose and to complete the full course of antimalarial drugs that are prescribed to you.
